1977 - part two

July 2: Release of the band's second single for Virgin records: Pretty Vacant / No Fun (VS184).

July 3: Malcolm McLaren goes to Los Angeles to meet Russ Meyer in order to work on the project of a Sex Pistols movie.

July 5: The band is busy making the video of Pretty Vacant directed by Mike Mansfield. An interview recorded this day appears on the "Pig Dog Interview" picture disc. Promo photos are taken by photographer Virginia Turbett.

July 13: Daddy's Dance Hall, Copenhagen, Denmark (recorded). Set List: Anarchy In The UK / I Wanna Be Me / Seventeen / New York / Satellite / No Feelings / No Fun / Holidays In The Sun / Problems / Pretty Vacant / God Save The Queen.

The Pistols checked in at the Plaza Hotel in Copenhagen in the vicinity of the famous "Tivoli" amusement park after their gig on the 13th of July. Some local kids gathered on the evening of the 13th. Sid and Johnny threw some stickers and flyers down to them.

The whole gig features on several bootlegs LP such as "Anarchy in Sweden '77" (Gun Records GUN001).

July 16: El Mogambo, Helsingborg (recorded). Set List: Anarchy In The UK / I Wanna Be Me / Seventeen / New York / EMI / Problems / No Feelings / Pretty Vacant / God Save The Queen. Available on the "Scandinavian Tour 77" bootleg LP (TMOQ).
Johnny Rotten interview with Tommy Vance is broadcast on Capitol Radio. Johnny picks some of his favourire records to be played during the interview.

July 17: Discotheque 42, Jonkoping.

July 19: Club Zebra, Kirstinehamn.

Trouble with some members of the audience who throw things at the band such as an ashtray during EMI, which hits Johnny Rotten. The song is stopped and played again.

July 21: Studenter Samfundet, Trondheim (recorded). Set List: Anarchy In The UK / I Wanna Be Me / Seventeen / New York / EMI / No Fun / No Feelings / Problems / God Save The Queen.
This soundboard recording features on the "Kiss This" 2 CD set released on October 17 1992 (Virgin records CDVX 2702).

July 23: Barbarellas Discotheque, Vaxjo.

July 27: Student Karen Happy House, Stockholm.

The gig is broadcast on radio and appears (minus No Feelings and No Fun) on bootlegs such as "Bad Boys" (Pecca BB77), "Bad Boys In Sweden" (Happy Porpak) and others. Anarchy In The UK / I Wanna Be Me / Seventeen / New York / Problems / No Fun appear on "The Filth & The Fury" bootleg video, "Seventeen" and "New York" are available on the "Never Mind The Bollocks - Classic Album" DVD.

July 29: Orfi, Linkoping.

July 30: Johnny Rotten appears on the front cover of Sounds magazine which includes a review of the Scandinavian Tour by journalist Ross Stapleton.

August 6: 4 page article on the band in the NME.

August 12: Air Recording Studios, London. Mixing of EMI, Submission, Satellite. Submission (with Sid Vicious on bass) available on CD2 of NMTB Super Deluxe Boxset.

August 13: Travis McGeestrom reviews an eleven track studio tape in the Record Mirror to announce (too soon) the release of the album. The tracks are: Seventeen / Pretty Vacant / New York / Holidays In The Sun / Liar / Problems / Anarchy In The UK / Submission / No Feelings / Satellite / EMI.

A three page article in Sounds looks at the Scandinavian tour, including pictures taken in Helsinborg by Jurek Drevenberg.

August 19: Lafayette Club, Wolverhampton. The band play under the name "SPOTS" (Sex Pistols On Tour Secretly). The set included Anarchy In The UK / I Wanna Be Me / Seventeen / No Feelings / Pretty Vacant / God Save The Queen, and an encore of No Fun. The venue was very small and the band had extensive PA problems.

August 24: Outlook Club, Doncaster (recorded). Set List: Anarchy In The UK / I Wanna Be Me / Seventeen / New York / EM / Holidays In The Sun / No Feelings / Problems / Pretty Vacant / God Save The Queen / No Fun.
The band name is "Tax Exiles".

August 25: Penthouse, Scarborough. Band name: "Special Guest".

August 26: Rock Garden, Middlesbrough. Band name: "Acne Rabble". An interview takes place backstage for a broadcast on Radio Tees.

August 27: Johnny Rotten is interviewed by Giovanni Dadomo for Sounds magazine.

August 31: Woods Centre, Plymouth. Band name: "The Hamsters".

September 1: Winter Gardens, Penzance. Band name: "A mystery band of international repute". The gig is filmed by Julien Temple. Some parts of it feature in "The Filth & The Fury" movie.

September 10: Sounds magazine reviews the concert in Doncaster.

September 19: Sex Pistols record a demo version of Belsen Was A Gas in their Denmark Street rehearsal room with their sound man Boogie. Available on CD2 of NMTB Super Deluxe Boxset.

September 28: Wessex Sound Studios, London. Mixing of Bodies, New York, Submission, Liar, EMI, No Feelings, Seventeen.

October 15: Virgin Records release the single: Holidays In The Sun / Satellite (VS191).

October 20: Johnny Rotten is on the front cover of Rolling Stone magazine with the headline "Rock is sick and living in London." The issue includes an article written by Charles M.Young about the Sex Pistols, the Slits and punk rock.

October 21: Paul Cook is interviewed by the French magazine Best. The interview will feature in the December issue.

October 28: Release of the Never Mind The Bollocks album (V2086) on Virgin Records in the UK. Trouble caused by the album title. Several different versions of the album are later made. (See the NMTB God Save The Sex Pistols guide).

November 2: Broadcast of an interview on Radio Luxembourg. Photographer Bob Gruen takes some (now well known) pictures of the band drinking and having fun in the radio studios.

November 17: Promotion for the LP continues. Steve Jones and Paul Cook take part in a signing session at Virgin Records, Sheffield. Steve and Paul then go to the pub next door before catching a taxi to be interviewed on Sheffield's Radio Hallam.
John and Sid travel up from London on the same train but get off at Nottingham.
Johnny is interviewed on Radio Clyde, Nottingham. He's also interviewed with Sid Vicious on Radio 1's "Rock On" programme.

November 18: Interview with Steve Jones and Paul Cook on Radio 3XY.

November 19: Entire band interviewed by Mike Gower, Chris John and Jay Crawford on Radio Forth, Edinburgh: recorded for transmission the following week.
Another interview with Johnny Rotten and Paul Cook takes place for Radio Metro, and then John, Steve and Paul are interviewed on Radio Clyde.

December 5: The Sex Pistols start a Dutch tour and play at the Eksit Club, Rotterdam.

December 6: Maastricht.

December 7: Pozjet Club, Tilburg. Later reviewed by the Daily Mirror.

December 8: De Stokvishal, Arnhem.

December 9: De Effenaar, Eindhoven (filmed). In 1996, the Efenaar club released a CD with a CD-rom part (Various - Efenaar 1971-1996 25 JAAR CD+ - EFCD+ 196). The CD features various bands and artists who played here, and it includes a brief video footage of the Sex Pistols taken from the audience. No audio recording has surfaced from this show.

December 10: Huize Maas, Groningen (recorded). Set List: God Save The Queen / I Wanna Be Me / Seventeen / New York / EMI / Bodies / Belsen Was A Gas / Holidays In The Sun / No Feelings / Problems / Pretty Vacant / Anarchy In The UK / No Fun / Liar / Submission.
It seems obvious that God Save The Queen is played, but it doesn't appear on any recording of the show.

December 11: Maf Centrum, Maasbree (recorded + filmed). Set List: God Save The Queen / I Wanna Be Me / Seventeen / New York / EMI / Bodies / Belsen Was A Gas / Holidays In The Sun / No Feelings/ Problems / Pretty Vacant / Anarchy In The UK / No Fun / Liar.
The last four tracks are broadcast on radio and feature on several CD and LPs such as "Kill The Hippies" (Big Music), "Anarchy In The EU" (Weird).
EMI / Pretty Vacant / Anarchy In The UK are shown on TV along with an interview of Malcolm McLaren. A second documentary is shown on Dutch TV with EMI (partial) / Pretty Vacant (incomplete) / Anarchy In The UK and a brief interview of Johnny Rotten recorded in England. EMI is available on the "Never Mind The Bollocks" Classic Album DVD and "The Filth & The Fury" bootleg video.

December 12: Donkiesjot Club, Sittard.

December 14: Eksit Club, Rotterdam. The concert is reviewed by Hervé Muller in the French magazine Rock & Folk. According to the article, the band plays all the songs of the album, along with Belsen Was A Gas, No Fun, and an encore of God Save The Queen.

December 16: Brunel University, Uxbridge (recorded). Set List: God Save The Queen / I Wanna Be Me / Seventeen / New York / EMI / Bodies / Belsen Was A Gas / Holidays In The Sun / Submission / No Feelings / Problems / Pretty Vacant / Anarchy In The UK / No Fun / Liar / God Save The Queen.

December 17: Mr Georges, Coventry (recorded). Set List: Seventeen / New York / EMI / Bodies / Belsen Was A Gas / Holidays In The Sun / Anarchy In The UK / Pretty Vacant.
The full recording is available on the TMOQ bootleg LP "Never Mind The Bands Tour 77" (tour mis-titled "Never Mind The BaNS" on the cover).
The Daily Mirror reviews the Pozjet Club concert in Tilburg from December 7th and includes an interview with Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten.
The Evening News reports that Belsen Was A Gas, played live on the Dutch tour, has shocked Jewish organisations. The song which was originally written by Sid Vicious when he was in Flowers Of Romance and re-worked by the Sex Pistols, is about the concentration camp of Bergen Belsen.

December 24: Links Pavilion, Cromer (recorded). Set List: God Save The Queen / I Wanna Be Me / Seventeen / New York / EMI / Bodies / Submission / Belsen Was A Gas / Holidays In The Sun / No Feelings / Problems / Pretty Vacant / Anarchy In The UK / No Fun.
Johnny Rotten is interviewed by French journalist Hervé Muller. The interview took place after the gig in Cromer, on route to Leicester, where the band stayed before going on to Huddersfield.
This interview will be used in the March 1978 issue of Rock & Folk along with some Peter Mazel pictures.
The Melody Maker reviews the concert in Uxbridge.

December 25: Ivanhoe's Club, Huddersfield
Afternoon show (filmed). The band plays in front of children of firefighters. The event is filmed by Julien Temple and parts of it can be seen in "The Filth & The Fury" movie. Sid Vicious (vocals and bass), Steve Jones and Paul Cook play Chinese Rocks and Born To Lose. Born To Lose is available on the album "Sid Sings" (Virgin Records).
Evening show (recorded + filmed). Set List: God Save The Queen / I Wanna Be Me / Seventeen / New York / EMI / Belsen Was A Gas / Bodies / Holidays In The Sun / No Feelings / Problems / Pretty Vacant / Anarchy In The UK / No Fun / Liar / Belsen Was A Gas / Submission / God Save The Queen.
The full gig available on "The Queen's Speech" bootleg among others. This is the last gig in the UK until the reunion in 1996. Parts of the show feature in "The Filth & The Fury" movie and in a 1998 British TV documentary about the concert.

In 1977, the band is interviewed on several occasions by Fred and Judy Vermorel for their book, originally titled "Sex Pistols", later re-titled "Sex Pistols. The Inside Story". These interviews are available on The Heyday tape (Factory Records 1980), re- released on CD by The Boutique Label in 2003.
