PRESS CUTTINGS
100 CLUB SPRING 1976

from the archive of Dave Smitham

Introduction
1976 Spring: Oxford Street’s 100 Club Residency. The Sex Pistols played an extended residency of ten performances at Oxford Street’s 100 Club from March until September 1976 - curtailed after the glass throwing incident on the second night of the Punk Festival. One late May afternoon, I went looking for the venue - after being tipped off by a Royal College of Art friend about the Sex Pistols doing regular Tuesday night shows, but was disappointed to discover the weekly residency had just concluded (another one of my ‘just missed the Pistols’ moments!). Below is one of the band’s very early reviews from this time - which I’m guessing is from NME. Not too complimentary about Steve’s playing, but it does give a good idea of the atmosphere and set list during those early gigs. Dave Smitham
