Rattle Your Cage

Reviewed by Phil Singleton

Rattle Your Cage brings together a plethora of Glen’s rock and roll prime cuts delivered over the course of a decade, and adds a whole lot more. Revisiting the songs in the studio, the tracks have been imbued with a new dynamism. More powerful than before, Glen has put the songs through their paces, adding a clarity of execution both vocally and musically.

The 14 songs originally featured across three albums. A new decade brings with it new production values and ensures they blend seamlessly into one vibrant offering. The opening strains of Rattle Your Cage are the rallying cry. Outstanding in its ability to grab your attention and move you at the same time, it perfectly distils the essence of Glen’s song writing; the craft, the shift in pace, the catchy riff, the thoughtful and witty lyrics, all in one song.

Those familiar with the previous versions will be thrilled with the strengthening of the material. Hot Water, live favourite A Different World, My Man, Story Of Your Life, and What Do You Want From Me?, represent Glen’s first solo album “Who’s He Think He Is When He’s At Home?” The thundering guitar rush has been harnessed, enhanced and energised, bringing them to life with a renewed confidence.

Going straight for the jugular are Mug’s Game, Idiot, the frantically paced Catatonic, and the aforementioned Rattle Your Cage. All four hail from “Open Mind”, and revel in the observational and questioning lyrical strength of the song writing. Idiot, with its sing-a-long chorus, burrows itself into your consciousness. Now given extra zest in the studio, the steam rolling bass and compelling guitar have given the songs a fresh urgency.

The “On Something” album provided a wealth of out and out rocking gems ideal for an update. Glen's reflective and personal lyrics collide with a heads down, no nonsense sensorial assault. Check out the punk rock thrash of White Knuckle Ride, the thundering statement of intent Piece Of The Action, and the optimistic Suck It And See. On Something itself is a modern day Matlock classic, a power ballad about strength and heartbreak, now benefitting from a shot of additional toughness. Better Start Getting Used To It, a song about flying in the face of adversity, carries with it a stark message: Don't let the bastards grind you down, just do what you want to do, and do it with style. It’s the perfect conclusion.

Rattle Your Cage is an album put together to rock. With the emphasis on energy, the new solid, foot full to the floor production, drives this collection firmly down the road labelled Rock ‘n’ Roll. Don’t be a bystander, place this disc in your player and begin the journey to invigoration.
