THE PUNK ROCK MOVIE - FIRST EVER SHOWING
INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS, LONDON
AUTUMN 1977
SEX PISTOLS WERE THERE... so was Lawrence Nicol

Lawrence Nicol remembers the day:

I was at a Subway Sect gig the night before and met and chatted with Don Letts who invited me along to the screening of the film, and the press conference afterwards. I said I had a fanzine in Scotland called Stranded [first time I'd used the name] and got in as a press man!

I was working on a building site up Hyde Park way. I stole time from work to go there; when I arrived there was a screen at the back of the room showing stills and a bit of footage of the Pistols from the Screen on the Green with the sound turned down. The press were shouting out questions and the Pistols, mostly Johnny, were answering. The complete movie wasn't shown till about a year later in a few cinemas around England.

It was a good laugh especially when Sid and Johnny started throwing cakes and sandwiches at the rest of the journalists during the question and answer part. I picked up the photo strips (see below), had a chat with the Pistols under the guise of writing it up in my fanzine, then fucked off back to the building site I was working at.

Below: Photo strips 1977 collected on the day by Lawrence Nicol
