PRETTY VACANT RELEASED 1st JULY 1977

from the archive of Dave Smitham

Introduction
Pretty Vacant, the Sex Pistol’s third single (with a tune based on an Abba hit), was released on July 1st 1977. The 45 was advertised in the music press through the now well known Nowhere / Boredom buses ... and later by the less well known Dance to the Sex Pistols. Censors missing the obvious relish of the band yelling out va – CUNT, could find no reason to ban the record, allowing it to be regularly played on radio. Two weeks after release, while Malcolm was away discussing the film Who Killed Bambi, Virgin arranged a Top of the Pops music video release on 14 July, much to the displeasure of the tabloid press.
