DISCOGRAPHY
UN-OFFICIAL / SEMI-OFFICIAL U.K.
DISCOGRAPHY The
following guide is divided into two parts to help distinguish between the essential
and the less than essential. Non UK releases are included if thought to be of
special interest. This
is primarily a 20th Century guide. The turn of the Millennium saw a
deluge of more of the same endless repackaged recordings. I am no
longer willing to waste my time wading through it all, as there is
nothing new! It's all here!
PART ONE
The
release of "SEXBOX" and "This
Is Crap" makes many "semi-official" releases
no longer essential.
The following, however, are worth seeking....
ALBUMS
December 1980
Factory FACT 30 "The Heyday"
Notes. Cassette only. Interviews with Sid Vicious, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, Johnny
Rotten, & Malcolm McLaren's grandmother. Conducted by Judy Vermorel.
Cassette available in both black and gold.
November 1985 77 Records 771 "Where Were
You In '77" Notes. Complete concert from Newport, Shropshire, 23rd
December 1977. Vinyl, later issued on CD (mastered direct from the vinyl).
March 1993
Dojo DOJO CD66. "Live At Chelmsford Prison"
Notes. CD issue, (also limited picture CD). Live performance from 17th September
1976. Unfortunately, the actual order of songs was changed for the release. Not
to be confused with the picture disc CD of (almost) the same name released in
the U.S. in 1990 on Restless (772511-2) which contains overdubbed crowd noises
& fake Johnny Rotten dialogue between songs. Subsequently
re-released on Castle's Essential label (ESMCD923) in 2000.
Update 2016. Now included complete in the box set "Live '76" (Universal Music Group 2016)
July 1995 Dojo CD216. "Wanted: The Goodman Tapes"
Notes. CD issue. Very
poor quality demo/live album. However, does contain different take of the
Cook/Jones rarity "Here We
Go Again", which IS excellent quality. Beware! One track is NOT the Sex
Pistols. Previously released in the U.S. on Skyclad (SEX 6 CD) in 1988,
as "We've Cum For Your Children (Wanted: The Goodman Tapes)"
Subsequently re-released on Castle's Essential label (ESMCD608) in 1998.
January 1996 Dojo CD222. "Pirates Of Destiny"
Notes. CD issue, (also limited picture CD). Contains original versions of '76
demos later reworked for the "Swindle" LP, plus the rare "Through
My Eyes". Beware! One track is NOT the Sex Pistols. Previously released
in the U.S. on Skyclad Inc.. Subsequently re-released on Castle's Essential
label (ESMCD609) in 1998. Update
June 2002. 'Sex Pistols' (box set) Virgin (SEXBOX1) includes the afore mentioned
demos. 1996
MBC Records 2140016 "The Italian Job"
Notes. CD re-issue of the "Italian Demos" LP included in JOCK BOX 1. Features
four Mike Thorne produced demos unavailable elsewhere; "No Feelings",
"No Future", "Liar", and "Problems". "Italian" refers
to a DJ who introduces the demos on Italian radio, from where these recordings
are taken. Also includes live & interview material. Update
June 2002. 'Sex Pistols' (box set) Virgin (SEXBOX1) includes the afore mentioned
demos. October
1996 When! WEN CD008. "Winterland Concert"
Notes. CD issue."Final" concert, San Francisco, 14/1/78. U.K issue does however
suffer from minor editing, unlike it's Japanese counterpart (VACM-1114), which
is unedited. Be warned, some Japanese re-pressings feature the same edit as the
U.K. release.
Subsequently re-released on Castle
Music as 'Live At Winterland' (CMRCD198) in 2001.
1997
Creativeman CMD-055 "The Swindle Continues"
Notes. US CD includes Goodman demos available elsewhere. However, of particular
note is the inclusion of the studio chat before the start of the 'Pretty Vacant'
demo, as heard on the original 'Spunk' bootleg. This studio chat does not appear
on "No
Future UK?" (see
below). Contains
the full version of 'No Fun' (as issued by Virgin with ending edited).
Update June
2002. 'Sex Pistols' (box set) Virgin (SEXBOX1) includes the afore mentioned full
version of 'No Fun' .
January 2000 Almafame YEAAH10LTD "The 76 Club"
Notes. The only non bootleg 'unedited' issue of the famous concert recorded at
Burton upon Trent, 24/9/76. However, some editing between songs has taken place.
Why? First 5000 copies issued as a 2CD set, the second CD containing extracts
from radio interviews with the band conducted in San Francisco, January 1978.
Update 2016. Now included complete in the box set "Live '76" (Universal Music Group 2016)
October 2001 Sanctuary
CMRCD355 "No
Future UK?"
Notes. CD re-issue. This legendary bootleg
brought together the "Spunk" bootleg (Denmark St., July '76; Gooseberry
Studios, January '77; & Wessex Studios '76 ) plus additional July '76 versions
of "Pretty Vacant" & "Anarchy In The UK", plus the Wessex
Studios "No Fun". Contains
the full version of 'No Fun' (as issued by Virgin with ending edited).
This release is of a far superior sound quality to
the previously available CD on
Receiver (RRLP 117). PART
TWO THE
REST...........
As a rough, incomplete, guide to the remaining semi/unofficial U.K. releases,
the following rating system has been applied.
*** Good quality/ recommended. This can include releases which have been
superceded by more comprehensive &/or better quality releases.
** Of limited interest.
May contain occasional interest, but overall, worth avoiding.
* Purchase at your peril.
Please note, the occassional non-U.K. release may appear where the country of
origin is unclear, or the release is exceptional & cannot be ignored.
