The Japanese pressing of the The Great Rock ‘N’ Roll Swindle double album, included an orchestral track Love Is A Song, which is unique to the Japanese release.
It raises a number of questions.
What is it doing on the LP? The connection is Bambi. The song was
composed by Larry Morey and Frank Churchill for Disney's film Bambi.
Perhaps it was included in original Swindle documentation as a possible
inclusion, in reference to the film's earlier incarnation as Who Killed
Bambi? Who recorded the version on this LP? Was it originally done for
the Swindle film or taken directly from Disney? The album offers no
clues.
The Japanese pressing also includes a cut of Lonely Boy
which features brief extra chat at the end, which is not on standard
pressings of the LP from other countries. It is worth noting that this
extra chat is also on the rare Australian / Australasia pressing, however on the Australian pressing it's in the fade out, and therefore not as clear as the Japanese mix.
Who Killed Bambi is the alternative take which was issued in the UK in 1981 credited to Ten Pole Tudor with Sex Pistols.
The gatefold sleeve was based on the UK
Version 2 sleeve, however the track listing in the four boxes has been
altered to the correct running order - again this is unique to this
pressing (pictured below). Love Is A Song is not listed. Note the
inclusion of Anarchy in The U.K. on side one and the different
lettering for EMI, which was perhaps altered for the same reason the
record company logos are also removed from the gatefold sleeve.
In
addition to the obi-strip, the catalogue number is printed on the top
right of the front sleeve. Lettering on the spine is in white.
A fold-out poster was issued with the LP along with a black and white double-sided insert.
The labels (see below) contain a number of mis-spellings and errors e.g. Bamby. The track listing here retains these mistakes. The labels on both LPs state Side 1 and Side 2.
