Sex Pistols / Ramones Tour 1976 The Tour That Never Was
|
Despite being an ocean apart, the two bands widely perceived to be the leaders of the developing punk movement would, on paper at least, seem to be the ultimate transatlantic touring combination.
Over a two week period in November 1976, it looked like it was going to happen. It was billed as the Pistols' first major tour with 20 dates running from 30th November through to 21st December. In addition to co-headliners Ramones, the proposed support was Chris Spedding and the Vibrators, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Talking Heads.
A major London show was also planned, although the venue remained unconfirmed.
However, within a fortnight it all collapsed with much recrimination. Ramones manager Danny Fields claimed it was never really on, which Malcolm McLaren denied.
The tour quickly evolved into the famous Anarchy Tour with support from The Clash, Heartbreakers and The Damned (initially). The Heartbreakers would ensure that New York's punk scene remained represented in the Ramones absence.
The cuttings from The Melody Maker and New Musical Express tell the story...
