Exclusive God Save The Sex Pistols Review by Dyson

After an enjoyable set by Wire, I got myself a beer and headed into the middle of the crowd to await the Sex Pistols.  Darkness had fallen, the earlier downpours had cleared and then the tones of Vera Lynn singing There'll Always Be An England filled the air. I think I was the only person in the entire crowd singing it (well, attempting to anyway).

On came the band to a rapturous applause.  John picked up a broken wine bottle and told the crowd in no uncertain terms he was going home if bottle throwing was the order of the day.  Then it was straight into Pretty Vacant. Straight after John told the lighting crew in his own polite way to turn down the lights which got a huge cheer.  To be honest, anything John said got a huge cheer!  Up next was Seventeen, No Feelings and all the usual classics.

After Holidays John was having a good old wail about Allah before ripping in to a fine performance of Baghdad Was A Blast with Jones' guitar sounding in fine form.  Bush got it in the neck next but for once I don't remember Malcolm Mclaren getting a mention. The band really cranked up for No Fun which speeded up towards the end.  Great stuff.  More bottle throwing ensued after God Save The Queen and EMI.

At this point the band just walked off.  Shit, I thought, that's it but after a minute or two, back on they came for the first of two encores.  Anarchy was fantastic, the 'chorus' at the end going on and on. I moved across the crowd at this point as a mass brawl between sieg heiling skins and long haired Italian youth had ensued earlier and my original spot, which was pefect sound-wise, had been lost .

Glen's bass was really pumping out right through the gig and Paul was totally professional as usual. John praised Turin and spoke a bit of Italian before the band went off again.  The crowd weren't going anyway though with whistling and yelling for the band.

On they came to do a shambolic Silver Machine and a great version of Roadrunner which seemed to go on forever.  After that, John stood with Glen and singled someone out in the crowd for a good berating Rotten-style, then they were gone for good.

Well worth the trip to Italy, no doubt about it. Oh, I met three of the band at the airport on the way from England but that's another story...
