PEACE & LOVE FESTIVAL, BORLANGE, SWEDEN REVIEW & PICTURES
27th June 2008
Exclusive Review & Pictures by Ariel Fun

After oversleeping and having to run so fast it pretty much felt like I was being carried by the hand of God to the parking lot where the stage was set up, I was rather flustered (or as Kat von D would say: 'totally stressed out'). For this reason I'm not 100 per cent sure about the second and third song on the set list, but here's my very best guess:

Pretty Vacant / No Feelings / Lazy Sod / New York / Did You No Wrong / Liar / (Beside The Seaside introduction to.)
Holidays In The Sun / Baghdad Was A Blast / Submission / Stepping Stone / No Fun / Problems / God Save The Queen / EMI. 1st encore: Bodies / Anarchy In The U.K. 2nd encore: Silver Machine / Roadrunner

The Pistols were on from 9.30 to 11 PM., which I thought was pretty good for a festival gig. Starting off with Pretty Vacant was a good choice, because it was something that even the non-fan part of the crowd could recognise and appreciate. Unfortunately the response from the crowd, which was 'mixed' to say the least, then dwindled considerably until they were played another song they'd heard before (like God Save The Queen and Anarchy In The U.K.).

This rather frustrating quietness prompted Johnny, who was dressed in a leafy camouflage tracksuit, to order the audience to make more noise. Further into the show he started imitating an Arabic muezzin or something of that sort, singing 'Allaaaah.' in Cheb Khaled style. He also, unsurprisingly, had a great time making fun of the fact that the festival was called 'Peace & Love', and somehow managed to go from 'Bring us your peace and love and we'll bring you our hate and war' via praising Jesus to saying 'Erase Iraq'. I'm not sure what sort of response he was looking for but what he got from the crowd was confusion. Either way he was in good form and seemed really cheerful while trying to provoke a reaction.

Glen, meanwhile, was his usual cool and competent self, didn't miss a beat. Steve seemed a little tired, or maybe just 'calm'. This didn't stop him from producing the deadly massive riffs we all know and love. He did have guitar problems and had to skip half a song at some point (I embarrassingly don't remember which one), before his roadie brought him another axe. For some reason he chose to play all of Silver Machine with a towel over his head (pictured below). Nice added touch!

I couldn't see much of Paul from where I was standing, but he seemed his usual, cheery self, bobbing up and down while drumming.

All in all I think they did a killer job throughout the first two thirds of the set. They were tight, loud and hard as ever. After that Johnny lost some of the words, the songs started to get longer and longer and also there were some problems sound-wise.

The second encore was a nice surprise. I honestly didn't think we were going to get one considering the lack of crowd response. Unfortunately I've never been a fan of Silver Machine, and for some reason Roadrunner seemed to go on and on for about six minutes (although I wasn't looking at my watch), but at least we got to hear two more songs from the best band in the world. To me the best songs were Did You No Wrong, Problems and Bodies. I did miss Satellite, but considering it doesn't seem to have been played at gigs lately I wasn't expecting them to do it anyway.

In conclusion I have to give the gig four stars out of five. It was definitely worth seeing despite the boring crowd and I'm looking forward to Helsinki and Hammersmith!
