God Save The Sex Pistols Review by Audun Nordseth

Last time the Sex Pistols played in Norway, was on the Scandinavia tour in 1977. One gig in Oslo and one in Trondheim. Two legendary shows that 10,000 claim they attended. The truth is that 400-500 really was there...  200 people showed up in Oslo at the Pingvin Club, it was more journalists than fans in the crowd, but just enough to change the Norwegian music scene forever. Just like every other country and towns the Pistols played, the punk movement came to Oslo and a lot of great bands was born the following year! I'm born in 1975 and missed the whole thing of natural causes .. in 1988 at the age of 13, was the year the Sex Pistols came into my life, and 1996 was when I had a chance to see them play live for the very first time. Norway was sadly not included on the Filthy Lucre Tour programme, so I went to England to see them in Finsbury Park among other great artists like Iggy Pop, Buzzcocks, Stiff Little Fingers, Wild Hearts and more.... What a great day!!!   =)

Now 12 years and 4 Pistols shows later, the day I have been waiting 20 years for was finally here! I was going for my 5th show, and this time in the country I live in! The Sex Pistols are back in Norway! This time in the north of the country in a city called Tromsø. A nice place surrounded with beautiful mountains and fjords. It's pretty cold and windy so far up north in the country, and it was very noticeable that day.. it was about 5 degrees celsius and it was a very changing day with sun, rain and wind. I could almost feel the snow was around the corner.. Bought 3 tour t-shirts for my collection and a glass of red wine to get warm when the first band played!

After seeing a couple of artists play, I followed around 2-300 others out of the festival area and down to my hotel because I was freezing my balls off! I missed a couple of bands, but it was worth it. After a 20 minutes walk, I was back at the hotel and had a hot shower and 5 beers while playing on my laptop for 3 hours. Went back to the festival area with warmer clothes and ready for the Pistols! Travis had just started playing when I got up there, and it was a lot of kids all over the place listening to Travis and waiting for the Pistols.

I'm not sure how many people were there, but rumours said that over 20,000 festival walkers showed up in total at Døgnvill 08.

Anyway... it was crowded with punks, metalheads, kids and parents and a few grandparents too! He he, a very funny mix of people at a festival I haven't seen before! Great! I hate the hooligans who are always out for trouble instead of fun at concerts, and I'm glad I couldn't see any of those in Tromsø!

The weather was a little better and Travis were about to finish their set. The crowd was in a great mood and sang along with all the songs the band played... Travis have a few good songs, but it's not the kind of music I listen to. I just wanted to see the Sex Pistols and was very excited over having my all time heroes back on stage in Norway for the first time in 31 years! When Travis came up with a encore, I thought: "NOOOOO!!!   I want the Pistols.....NOW!!!"

When they finally left the stage at 21:45, Boney M entered stage two while the crew worked and soundchecked for the Pistols on the mainstage. I didn't care about watching Boney M, so I found a place in the first row on Glen Matlock's side of the stage. When I saw them in Greece in July, I was standing on Jonesy's side. Great view both times! Finally something happened around 22:45... The stage turned black, and "There'll always be an England" was played over the monitors on stage... Everybody knew what was going on and the crowd woke up. I had the same feeling as I had in Athens, and everything felt alright! I was going to see the Sex Pistols live for the 5th time in a few seconds!

Earlier on in the day when the Sex Pistols arrived in Tromsø, they thought it was so cold that they had a shopping tour in the city for warmer clothes and something to eat. They bought themselves a couple of knitted sweaters (Lusekofte) of wool in an old traditional norwegian style. (Two page special in the local newspaper Tromsø)*.

The boys came on stage one by one with Paul as the first one! John entered the stage with his new Lusekofte on, it was fun seeing him dressed up as a traditional Norwegian. John joked about why they came on a little later than planned... He had watched Boney M! He he... They all looked good and in great shape and ready to play for the Norwegian audience. It all started with Pretty Vacant and continued with the standard playlist.

The sound, the crowd, the stage, the band.... Everything was perfect! I wasnt cold anymore; I had about 6 pints of beer inside, I  had young sexy girls around me and the best band in the world was standing right in front of me playing the best songs in the world! Not much can compare to that!

The band had great fun up on stage, they laughed, joked and flirted with the audience all the time! Steve threw 2 plectrums and Glen one towel and a t-shirt to the crowd...  I could clearly hear a wild screaming girl get her hands on Glen's red t-shirt... Lucky girl!! The communication between each member is so great to watch... They are perfect bandmates! Luckily no bottle incidents happened this time; now it was John who shocked the crowd with showing off his bare naked ass and balls! He he..  After two short smoking breaks, they ended it all with Silver Machine and Roadrunner as the last encore.

After the show, everybody went out of the festival area to go home or to the pubs for more to drink and have fun; many people were  collecting promotional posters that were hanging around on the walls in town... Me included, promo posters are always fun to have!

The 2008 version of the Sex Pistols is so great and so strong that I hope they will tour, play and release new material on records forever! Thank you again the Sex Pistols for another great show. Hope to see you again in the near future!

*The trip John and Rambo had in Tromsø city, was the only review with pictures you could see in Norwegian newspapers the day after the concert. That's all because of a  protest against a photo contract the journalists refused to sign......

That means that this could be the only review with photos from the show they played here in Norway this time..

A special thanks to Phil Singleton for doing so much good work for all fans and the Pistols with the best Sex Pistols site in the world! God Save The Sex Pistols! Keep up the good work.
