WOW, What a night, I never thought I would say this, but last night was better than Finsbury Park, Phoenix Festival in '96 and Manchester last year (my only Pistols gigs)
First the support. THE KIDS - I was very impressed with this Belgian pop/punk act, they got the crowd going with their catchy tunes. BUZZCOCKS - Great set, the crowd loved it when the set was trashed at the end. NEW YORK DOLLS - I was looking forward to these and they didn't disappoint. I got trampled on and nearly had my nose broke when they did Jetboy at the end. The only cringe worthy moment was when David Johansen kept referring to the crowd as from Brussels. I guess he has only heard of that city in Belgium.
THE SEX PISTOLS - Was it worth the trip from sunny Sheffield? YES IT WAS. A fantastically tight performance; I thought Jonesy was immense, Lydon was on great form, and the rhythm section kept it solid (I love Sid but how he must have f##ked the sound up). Lydon didn't seem bothered when someone pointed a lazer at him. There was a mixed reaction to his "Praise Allah" rant before Baghdad Was A Blast (yet he actually sang Belsen Was A Gas in the opening verse).
What a night and the best I have seen them play; they actually look like they enjoy it these days.
Oh well back home to Blighty.....THERE WILL ALWAYS BE AN ENGLANNNNND. |
