LIVE AT LOCH LOMOND FESTIVAL, BALLOCH, SCOTLAND
& HAMMERSMITH, LONDON

God Save The Sex Pistols Review by Luke

My name is Luke, I am 23 and live down under near Albany in Western Australia. I've been a fan of the Sex Pistols for ten years and for about the last four years I've been checking this website at least once a week just hoping the Pistols would play again and announce an Australian tour, but I never ever really thought that I'd ever get to see them play live.

Then in May this year I thought "what the hell" and bought a ticket for the Loch Lomond show and booked the flights. After I booked all the flights they announced a show at the Hammersmith Apollo and, as I would be in London at that time, I quickly grabbed a ticket for the show. Also I was quite impressed that the Pistols called the tour the Combine Harvester Tour because I live and work on my parents' farm.

I flew out on the 30th of July to Glasgow and stayed there, then off to Loch Lomond on the Sunday 3rd of August to see the Pistols for the first time. I was so excited when I got there although the whole day it all seemed a little surreal and I thought "am I really going to see the Sex Pistols play today?"

I made my way to the front against the rail at the stage about one hour before the Pistols were due on, right in front of where Glen would be playing, as I was expecting there to be a big rush. Finally at 9pm the Pistols came on and Rotten says, "How the fuck are ya, we're the Sex Pistols, and we're hear 'cos we fuckin' love ya. Now, the old throat's a bit sore but I don't give a fuck if I wreck my voice for ya'", and then they blasted into Pretty Vacant.

The sound was amazing along with the old voice of Rotten, finally seeing them live; Steve, Paul, Glen & John were all on form and the old songs still sounded fresh and brand new. The crowd was a mix of young, old and families. It was quite tame at the front with not much pushing and shoving which was good for taking some great photos and videos. They played the same setlist as on all the shows with classic banter from John inbetween songs. As they finished with Roadrunner and left the stage I just sood there after, trying to take in what had been one hell of a night seeing the Pistols for the first time.

I then went on a 25 day contiki tour through Europe, but that's another story, although while I was in Spain I saw one of Glen's first bass guitars, signed by Glen, in the Hard Rock Cafe, and I also saw Glen's first acoustic guitar in the London Hard Rock Cafe.

I was back in London on the 31st of August, off to the Apollo on the 2nd of September; waited in line for just over an hour, got in - went straight to the front where Glen would be playin' again. What a great venue - the stage was low to the ground and I was so damn close to the stage. I could tell this was going to be a good night.

Paul walks on, then Glen half runs out with his hands in the air followed by Steve and John. This time they played Pretty Vacant country style then into the real version. Once again I couldn't get over how good they sounded live (and a credit to the sound man). Every song was a highlight with the boys playing only three feet away in front of me. The crowd this time was probably more older than young. Then somone landed on my head and it felt like I'd broke my neck, but I was alright although I saw one young girl being carried out who looked like she had passed out.

Once again the onstage banter from John was classic, so was singing Happy Birthday to Fatty Jones. But there was somthing special about this show almost as if I'd witnessed somthing that will go down in history, especially at the end when all four Pistols were at the front singing "We love you England we do", and John saying "From the heart." I was so glad that I was there. What a night. Talking to fans after the show, some were saying this was one of the best Pistols shows ever. I don't know as this was my second time, but I'll remember it forever.

So in total I spent about $10,000 (5000 of your pounds) on plane tickets etc. to see the Pistols play and to have a holiday through Europe while I was over there. Was it worth it? Oh hell yes. Now that I flew to the UK to see the Pistols I just hope they return the favour and play here in Perth, Western Australia, cos I'd love to see them again.

Thank you Sex Pistols.
