SZIGETRE FESTIVAL, HUNGARY, REVIEWED
15th August 2008
God Save The Sex Pistols Review by Sydney

Exactly 6 weeks after my 1st Pistols' show, I decided to see them again at the largest festival in Central Europe - the Sziget Festival. Sziget has many visitors every year - about 300,000 people from the whole of Europe; only 50 per cent are Hungarians. I got my ticket only a week before gig and I think it was cheap.

My trip to the capital of Hungary was not longer than my trip to Hodokvas. After seeing some sights, I went to Obudai Island on River Danube where the festival was, and where Pistols performed. As usually in Hungary, there was very hot, hot weather. I got there at 20.00 or so and saw band "Die ärzte" which performed on the Main Stage before the Sex Pistols. I do not like them but they ended soon and I was waiting for Pistols. I'd like to see Pistols in some club, I do not like huge festivals with many bands, I'm only there just because of the Pistols. I got my great place near the stage and I could see them very well and clearly. Then I saw Mr. Rambo and staff setting the stage.

The gig itself started with the usual Vera Lynn's There´ll always be an England, and I thought they would repeat it many times like in Japan; they didn't. The Pistols got on stage about 21.30. I felt those emotions you can't compare with anything.  "First time ever in Hungary. It´s good to see ya." said John. I thought it would be better show than Hodokvas, but I didn´t expect that. It was a blast! Sex Pistols in a top form as we could see started with Pretty Vacant. "FROM THE HEART..." Johnny repeated many times during the show.  After 1st song John saw some paparazzi taking photos of him and said "Fuck you, paparazzi" and everybody was laughing.

John showed us his British-flag trunks during No Feelings and his ass while he was singing New York. I held my very tiny camera and tried to film something. People round were jumping and fortunately not on my back as in Hodokvas.  Following songs, Did You No Wrong, Liar, Holidays In The Sun and Submission, were great. After Stepping Stone John asked the crowd if George Bush should be in Iraq..."Noooo" we answered. We don´t like G. Bush being anywhere. He told us that all politicians should be arrested and all government is enemy. Then he looked at the sky and waved "Hello Allah! Hello Jesus!" They played Belsen Was A Gas/Baghdad Was A Blast. "Has Hungary a voice?" was the beginning of God Save The Queen. "Is this singing a-long with Johnny and the boys?" Right and then left side of the crowd shouted "NO FUTURE!"

After EMI Johnny said, "And if ya want more, make a huge noise. We are just going to have a cigarette." We made really huge noise and they returned. "Do ya want our bodies? Uno momento." John extinguished his cigarette. He was talking to us about nipples. He put microphone near his nipple and got "woooo.." from the crowd. "Nipples are nice!" Glorious Bodies. Then Anarchy. It was the very long version. When we started to sing-a-long we couldn´t stop. "I wannabee anarchist. Get pissed. Destroooy!" John ended Anarchy. John's thank "Thank you Glen! Thank you Steve! Thank you Paul! Thank you Rambo! Thank you Hungary! And thank you Johnny!" Again "...and if you want more we need to hear you! We'll be backstage listening!"

SEX PISTOLS! WE WANT MORE!!! You could hear round whole Main Stage, maybe the whole island. They came back for 2nd encore. "Do you remember original riff?" Silver Machine began. Then Roadrunner. 7 wonderful minutes; "Keep your radio on!" Johnny saluted us "Good bye! Good evening!" Some roll of toilet paper landed on the stage. "Thank ya for lovin' Pistols. First time ever in Hungary. YOU WERE AWESOME. Good night!" They ended 23.10 or so.

They always give 100 per cent on their gigs. I enjoyed the show and I'm sure the Pistols did too. One of the best festival show they played on Combine Harvester Tour. Unbelieveable and unforgettable evening. It was from the heart and I think we done them proud. They really prove to me that they are better now than they were in 70s. Nothing compares to them. They´ve changed my life and they still mean a lot to me. It's difficult to find the words, it was one breathtaking gig. Those always valid songs, full of truth and honesty, you can´t compare with any other band. There's a huge difference. Thank you boys. I´m looking forward to seeing you again.

Set list: Pretty Vacant / Seventeen / No Feelings / New York / Did You No Wrong / Liar / Holidays In The Sun / Submission / Stepping Stone / Belsen Was A Gas / No Fun / Problems / God Save The Queen / EMI. Encore 1: Bodies / Anarchy In The UK(Hungary). Encore 2: Silver Machine / Roadrunner
