HAMMERSMITH APOLLO, LONDON, REVIEWED

God Save The Sex Pistols Review by Steve Pittis

I had tickets for Brixton last year, but a horrible virus laid me low for a couple of months and I couldn't make it. So when the reviews on God Save The Sex Pistols started rolling in, I felt like Cinderella - I wasn't part of it.missed out.

So, I was well pleased when Hammersmith was announced, would this make up for it? 1000% yes. This show was one of the most blistering, exhilarating gigs I've ever seen. The atmosphere was pretty electric before they took the stage. Although, instead of the chart punk spun by the DJ, personally I would have preferred heavy dub with a bottom end that makes your trousers vibrate to have been booming out of the speakers. Would have given things more of a "feel of the time", but I'm certain I'm in the minority there though.

The band took the stage after the rousing There'll Always Be An England intro and everyone seemed well up for it. John announced that they'd brought a nice hangover back from Dublin with them - well they didn't play like it; they played like their lives depended on it. The sound was great, very clear and nice and loud.

It's difficult to pick any one song as a stand out but if I had to, No Fun was the point when I realised just how good a show I was witnessing. This is a band that had been on the road together for a few months and don't it show? All the nuts and bolts have been well and truly tightened and they rock like few others. In fact "No Fun" rolled as well - it grooved and swaggered and it was impossible not to get off your arse. As somebody who loves The Stooges more than most things in life, it has to be said that the Pistols 2008 version pisses on The Stooges 90 miles an hour recent take on it.

Holidays In The Sun teased us with its longer intro before Paul Cook's iconic machine gun drum burst belted you in the balls and they tore into it like possessed sonic terrorists. No let ups.usual encores.Bodies felt like you've just mainlined speed into your eyeballs, Anarchy for everyone to sing along to and punch the sky, and the rest, as they say, is his-tor-y. I think it may have been Jon Savage (or was it John Ingman, I can't remember) who said years ago that this was the only band that could get you up dancing every time, and as a 50 year old man who leapt around like a 16 year old for an hour or so (never to be repeated), I'll go along with that.

John, Steve, Paul, Glen - thanks fellas, and now go and make another fantastic record. It's been a while you know..
