SPARKS - DICK AROUND / WATERPROOF / INTERVIEW with Sparks by Steve Jones of Jonesy's Jukebox (Gut Records)

Released 18th September 2006

There can't be many music buffs not familiar with Sparks, now in their 4th decade. Dick Around and Waterproof are taken from their 20th album Hello Young Lovers. Ron and Russell Mael's style hasn't changed much over the years. The production is now highly polished and modern, but Sparks are Sparks and remain unmistakable. Dick Around conjures up a mixture of metal, punk and Bohemian Rhapsody. The title of the song may hinder airplay which would be a shame because it's great fun. Waterproof is perky and melodic, varying its pace as it unfolds, but it's Dick Around that steals the show. You can judge the track yourself by viewing the video: WMP / Quicktime.

As for the interview, it's a Steve Jones treat. Steve hilariously tells Ron and Russell that he only used to steal equipment from bands he liked and then says he never stole from Sparks. Listen as he digs himself out of this hole! There is a very enlightening tale about a girl from Steve's past and her preference for the great unwashed. I won't reveal any more and spoil it for you. He also recalls listening to Sparks in Paul Cook's bedroom as a teenager.

Sparks: still zany, ironic and unique.
